Club Purpose: To provide support and
encouragement for laryngectomees, their families and friends through personal
interaction.
Meetings: The Suncoast New Voice Club meets
the second Sunday of each month September through May at 2 p.m. The location
is Mease Countryside Hospital in the lower level conference rooms. Meetings
are designed to improve lifestyles by providing information on topics ranging
from general health care and current medical advances in laryngectomee
rehabilitation to daily exercise for health maintenance.
Club Services:
Visitation: A number of trained laryngectomee visitors are available
to offer information and support to those facing or following the removal of
the voice box. Visits can be arranged within Pinellas County by calling
Charlie Blair, (727) 391-3473.
Public Education: The Suncoast New Voice Club
has been a leader speaking out on laryngectomee issues. Perhaps the most
sensitive subject is the danger of tobacco. Thanks to the efforts of
our extraordinary team of Jerry Hough and Bill Beurkins, they made more than
40 anti-smoking presentations each school year to children of all ages. Due
to varying reasons neither Jerry nor Bill are able to continue this valuable
service. We propose to train other members in the October FLA Annual Meeting
to continue these services. For more information call Charlie Blair.
Loan Closet: For many years we have helped
laryngectomees by loaning them an artificial larynx while they are obtaining
one or while they are having one repaired. Several types of artificial
larynges are available and all laryngectomees, recent or long-standing, are
encouraged to use this “loan” service. For loan requests call Charlie Blair.
